FINDING REST: A WISE COUNSELOR LISTENS

The apostles returned to Jesus from their ministry tour and told him all they had done and taught. Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn’t even have time to eat. Mark 6:30 NLT

What does a relationship with Jesus offer us? How can we find our rest in Him?

Faithful listener. Jesus listens to our needs. When Jesus' disciples finished their ministry assignment, they returned to Jesus, and they began to tell Him all about their adventures. Mark 6:30 says that the disciples "told him all they had done and taught."

When someone comes to us exhausted and troubled, sometimes it's difficult to be just be quiet and listen without interrupting them. I struggle with finishing someone's sentence and getting impatient, especially when I think I know what he is about to say next.

I'm also tempted to respond to others by relating my own problems, instead of listening, "Well, you think YOU had a bad day … let me tell you about mine!"

Wise counselor. Jesus gives us an example of a wise counselor who listens. Many times, people who come to us for help, just need for us to listen.

James 1:19 encourages us, "Understand this … You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry" (NLT).
