Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. (James 1:17 TNIV)

A couple of years ago, I looked up the word “gift” in an online version of the Bible (YouVersion.com, New Living Translation), and I found almost 400 verses that included that word.

Recognize. One familiar scripture stood out to me that day: "We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us." (Romans 12:6).

Receive. This promise reminds me that I didn't earn or deserve any the spiritual gifts that I might possess. They are part of my spiritual inheritance as a Christ-follower: “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3).

Remember. As I approach this Christmas season of gift giving and receiving, often I get distracted by all emphasis on buying and exchanging gifts. This year, I pray that I can keep my focus on the ultimate Gift-Giver and His Gift: ”For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
