Looking back with Mary
This week in the Blessed Journal, I share a story by Mary Larmoyeux, called “Mama’s Hands.”
Response. I can hardly write this post without more tears blurring my vision. Mary’s tender story gives us an intimate glimpse at her relationship with her mother. And I think it might just tug at your heart strings, too.
Relate. I can really relate to Mary’s comment about how her own hands looked just like her mother’s hands did years ago. And sometimes when I look into the mirror, I can see my mother looking back at me. In fact, I still repeat some of Mother’s famous phrases, like I did when my children were younger. And I still wince when I hear myself say, “Rise and shine!”
Reflect. I hope Mary’s story brings back some pleasant memories for you. And even if some of your memories aren’t all that nice or comfortable, I hope you’ll write them down as a written legacy to your own children.
Thanks, Mary, for sharing your story with us. I hope some of our readers will share their stories with us, too.
Writing prompts
1. What stories came to mind as you read Mary’s story, “Mama’s Hands”?
2. When you think of your own mother, what other people, places, or events come to your mind?
3. Try to describe your own mother, grandmother, or another special person in your life. What did she look like? How did you relate to her? How did she relate to others? What were some of her values—spiritual, moral, family, etc.?
Keep writing!
Karen
