Teaching Respect

How do you teach your children to respect each other and all of their belongings? One mom uses a Treasure Box as one of her teaching tools.

This week, in the BLESSED Journal, I wrote about a "Treasure Box." One mom uses this clever idea to encourage her boys, ages four and six, to respect others and their own possessions.

Confusion. I know children must get confused when their parents and teachers demand that they not be selfish and share their playthings. They often get in trouble when they don't take care of their toys and other belongings.

Order. In this story, the mom brings order to her household by setting a few rules and putting some necessary teaching tools into place. I know a simple treasure box cannot stop all the sibling rivalry that occurs in some households. But it might just avert a crisis from turning into a full-blown battle some day, like it did for Aidan and Ethan in this story

Would you be willing to share some other tactics that have worked for you? Even if your children are grown with children of their own, I know some younger parents who would appreciate some help in this area. We'd love to hear from you!

Keep writing!

"Great idea, Karen! Do the boys have a limited number of things that they can put in the treasure chest? And can only the owner of an item get it out?" (Mary).

Mary, the boys are limited only by the size of their treasure boxes. And they are not allowed access to each other's boxes without permission.
