Tuck's Tales: "White Trash"
You may be shocked by the title of Tuck Mantooth's article, "White Trash," this week on the BLESSED Journal. But I hope you will take time to read his story.
Childhood Memories. Once again, Tuck takes us back to his childhood memories of the South. You can hear the innocent voice of this little country boy telling us about his grandma and his mama. We can also see how the beliefs of a parent are often reflected in a child.
Cultural Predjudices. I laughed when I first read Tuck's tale. But he also reminded me of the prejudices—especially of race, gender, religion, and economic status—that I observed as a child. In fact, I still see the consequence of those attitudes reflected today—with all the suspicions, discrimination, and even violent behavior that plague our society.
Thank you, Tuck, for this subtle reminder that others are watching us—especially our children!
