Focus: "Whatever is lovely"

Have you ever tried to focus on your blessings when you are worried? It can be a challenge!

Worry, worry, worry. Sometimes I tend to worry about everything—things I can change and those circumstances that are out of my control. But how can I change my way of thinking?

One morning a few weeks ago, I found myself worried about everything. I thought of Philippians 4:6, which instructs us not to be "anxious about anything." Then, Philippians 4:8 encourages us to think about things that are true, noble, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy.

So, how do I not be "anxious about anything"? I couldn't seem to do that with my own willpower. In fact, I felt powerless to change my own mind or even to communicate my concerns to the Lord.

Later that morning, I decided to take a walk, in an attempt to get my mind off of all my worries. As I walked down the trail through the woods near my home, the sun beamed down on my face, and a cool wind blew the treetops. Then, as I focused on the beauty of God's creation, I remembered the instructions in God's Word to dwell on "whatever is lovely" (Phil. 4:8).

Peace of mind. Later, I realized my worries had disappeared from my thoughts. And I sensed God's peace in my heart and in my mind (Phil. 4:7).

God answered the desire of my heart—peace of mind—as He prompted me to take a walk for my physical and mental health. Even when I didn't feel particularly blessed, God reminded me of His blessings, as I took my worries to Him in prayer.
